Qualification Requirements for a UK Registered Trade Mark Attorney
Qualifications for becoming a UK Registered Trade Mark Attorney comprise: (i) one year of academic training in trademark law and practice; (ii) two years of professional trademark work experience; and (iii) examinations on trademark law and practice administered by the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA).
The Certificate in Trade Mark Law & Practice at the School of Law, Queen Mary, University of London, satisfies the educational requirements for those wishing to qualify as Trade Mark Attorneys in the United Kingdom.
The Certificate in Trade Mark Law & Practice program consists of four compulsory 15-credit modules:
- Foundations of Law for Trade Mark Practice
- Trade Mark Law & Practice A
- Trade Mark Law & Practice B
- Designs and Copyright Law

Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice
The Oxford Diploma in IP Law and Practice is offered by the Oxford Intellectual Property Research Centre and is a postgraduate vocational course for people embarking on a career in IP law and practice. It is a one-year, part-time course designed to teach junior practitioners the fundamentals of IP law and practice. It is taught by senior practitioners and academics, and represents a unique collaboration between the Oxford Law Faculty and the Intellectual Property Lawyers’ Association.
The Oxford Diploma in IP Law and Practice comprises a two-week residential program held in September at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, and a series of weekend workshops held from October to June in London law firms. It is taught by a mix of practicing and academic lawyers, and covers the full range of IP subjects (including Patents, Trade Marks, Unfair Competition and Passing Off, Trade Secrets, Designs, Copyright and Moral Rights) as well as key aspects of litigious and non-litigious IP practice and procedure.
